About Teri (Duarte) Rocco
I am “homegrown”, a 50-year Garden Grove resident and a product of the Garden Grove Unified School District. I attended Wakeham Elementary, Alamitos Intermediate and Pacifica High School. My children, Mike and Gina, also attended schools in GGUSD and my grandchildren, Ava and Noah, currently attend school in the district.
As a retired GGUSD administrator and teacher, I have 42 years of classroom and leadership experience. My career started as a bilingual instructional aide, assisting teachers and supporting English learners and then I became a school community liaison, interpreting and translating for teachers and supporting parents. During my teaching career at Russell Elementary I also taught Parent education & English classes and facilitated community meetings with the Santa Ana police department. I learned that when parents are informed they become empowered to advocate for their children and inspired to take on leadership roles to advocate for all children.
My advocacy for parents continued when I worked as an administrator at the District Office to establish the Parent & Community Outreach Department at GGUSD. I served as school and district contact person in matters related to parent/family engagement, parent/family support, and family friendly schools. My responsibilities included creating partnerships with community agencies that provide services and programs for families, implementing quality parent education programs and organizing Community Outreach meetings that provided information on topics such as risky behaviors posing barriers to student learning, college entrance requirements, financial aid, internet safety, and mental wellness.
Appointed to the GGUSD School Board in January 2015, I was elected in November 2016. I do not take my responsibilities lightly and have worked diligently to ensure our students come first and that every child has resources for a quality education. I consider the needs of students, parents and teachers/staff in the decisions I have made.
